Hostwinds Patches Zero Day Exploit VENOM (Resolved)

Affecting System - KVM Based Services | Priority - Critical

A security flaw has been found in QEMU's Floppy Disk Controller (FDC) emulation code, this flaw is being labeled as VENOM (Virtualized Environment Neglected Operations Manipulation), CVE-2015-3456. This affects all KVM servers (Premium VPS, Windows VPS, SSD VPS).

?

An out-of-bounds memory access flaw was found in the way QEMU's virtual Floppy Disk Controller (FDC) handled FIFO buffer access while processing certain FDC commands. A privileged guest user could use this flaw to crash the guest or, potentially, execute arbitrary code on the host with the privileges of the host's QEMU process corresponding to the guest.

?

The flaw affects all versions of QEMU going back to 2004, when the virtual floppy controller was first introduced. Fortunately there is no known exploit that can successfully attack the flaw so far. Yet VENOM is risky enough to be considered high-priority vulnerability. In order to mount an exploit attempt, a user on the guest machine would need sufficient permissions to access the floppy disk controller I/O ports. On Linux guests, that means the user would need to have root access or otherwise elevated privilege. But on Windows guests, practically any user would have sufficient permissions.

?

Hostwinds is patching this vulnerability, however in order to successfully patch the servers, a power cycle will be required.

?

The total downtime will be less than 15 minutes. After which normal services will continue. We apologize for the inconvenience, however server security and integrity is of the utmost importance.

Hostwinds Datacenter Power Issues (Resolved)

Affecting System - ALL services | Priority - Medium

Today, around 13:20 CDT our Data Center experienced a power event failure. The UPS for the facility had failed unexpectedly.

Service downtime was minimal, under 15 minutes reported.

Presently, we are being updated that the Data Center has their UPS tech onsite, and they believe that parts are needed to be replaced. The parts are expected to arrive on-site around 21:30 CDT to 22:00 CDT.

?

There should be no impact to services, given that repairs go as planned, to roll back from the bypass mode that services are presently in.

There is no need for concern as long as the Utility power remains constant as repairs are made.

We will provide continual updates here, as they become available.

** UPDATE ***
